Summary:

Hachette has entered into new ebook contracts with retailers following the ebook pricing settlement with the Department of Justice. Amazon and Barnes & Noble are now discounting the publisher’s ebooks, and other retailers should follow soon.

Hachette’s new contracts with ebook retailers following the publisher’s September settlement with the Department of Justice are now place. As of Tuesday, Amazon had begun discounting some Hachette ebooks slightly; today, the discounts are larger, and Google and Barnes & Noble is discounting as well. Apple is not discounting the ebooks yet.

A Hachette spokeswoman told me, “As per our settlement with the DOJ, we are not preventing discounting of our ebooks by our ebook agents.  What you’re seeing on retail sites could be our ebook agents adopting these new terms.”

Here are some of the discounts I’m seeing on Hachette titles so far — correct as of this writing, but could change at any time. For these books, it appears that Barnes & Noble and Amazon — and, generally, Google — are matching each other’s prices on new titles, offering about a 15 percent discount.

HarperCollins entered new retailer contracts just a few days after the settlement went through in September. The third settling publisher, Simon & Schuster, appears not to have made new contracts yet, as their ebook prices are still listed as “set by the publisher” on Amazon.
