I hope this is not a prank, b/c I agree completely. To kill The Daily like that has no sense.

I would also love to see the new owner (if your public appeals work, Jordan) diversify the payment options by adding on-demand access, opt-in advertising, embeddable widgets, P2P affiliation, etc. 100K paying subscribers is a very nice start. by adding those other options, however, one can increase the outreach and cash flow several times.

Nothing. And you are correct. The point is betting exclusively on a subscription based news app as your only method of distribution and revenue is a recipe for failure - and we did not need The Daily to teach us this lesson.

New news brand = good. Trying to start it from the cluttered depths of the Apple Newsstand and spending big bucks to do it = notsogood.

so many points here sound to me as if you're saying "be more like the web" - open, integrated, continuously updated, multiplatform, non-linear etc.
All of these things are characteristics of any decent news website.
What does a subscription-based app built along these lines offer that is different to a website with a paywall?

Great article, and I fundamentally agree, but area I take exception is trying to align with every other site out there that simply pours content onto their site as fast as someone can type.

I agree that news is a constant process, but I also enjoy longer and deeper articles that frame the story rather than regurgitate the AP feed. I have watched many sites try to balance the two and with varying degrees of success.

What the Daily missed was the opportunity to find that sweetspot and deliver it in a way that no other site has accomplished in my opinion.
