I started with a technical degree and have always stayed technical, it always amazes me how people who're so good at Art (theater, music, etc) can also be so good at technical subjects like programming. I play music instruments but wouldn't call myself a professional and certainly can't make a living out of it. Hats off to you!

My start as a software engineer is very similar to this. I majored in music and after a few years working as a musician realized that I needed a 'real' job. I taught myself programming but unfortunately wasn't able to get a job without a technical degree, so went back to school and got a masters in computer science (my self-taught programming along with name recognition of my undergrad school was enough to get me admitted, if barely).

Turns out I took to it very well and have been in the industry for about 15 yours now. Best career move I ever made and I still get to play professionally on the side :)

If anyone is reading this wondering whether or not to make the career switch I would highly recommend it!
