The Magazine looks great, ironically in the way that great printed magazines look great. Clean, simple. And yes, you're right, publishers' websites are too cluttered. But I don't think that's a case of "trying to fit in everything we did before in a new container". It's because that is what they have been told is how web pages should be. They should have all these navigation tools and drop downs and floating ads, and a million things going on. Because that is what they've been told people expect.
It's not about having defined their business in the wrong way is not to have it redefined when the time came.
Many people think that a person or a business, after it's born must carry it's bad characteristics as a curse until they die.
Reinvention is key but most people don't consider the chance to reinvent themselves or their businesses.
