If you missed out on the first run of Nexus 4 smartphones from Google, you get a second chance on Tuesday, provided you live in the U.S. Google notified potential customers of new stock available, but still needs to improve the direct to consumer buying experience.

Consumers in the U.S. that missed out on getting a Google Nexus 4 smartphone at launch get a second chance on Tuesday. At noon PST, the “sold out” status for Nexus 4 phones in the Google Play store will change to “available.” Google provided a heads-up via email to those who registered for updates on the Nexus 4 saying the handsets would again be available for ordering, suggesting another production run added inventory of the phone.

Nexus 4 orderingFor the money and without a contract  — $299 for an 8 GB model or $349 with 16 GB of storage — I find the Nexus 4 to be an outstanding value. In my review, I noted that the hardware advances had me considering an upgrade from last year’s model and I typically upgrade with every other Nexus phone. The display is fantastic, the performance is top-notch and the camera is vastly improved. As a result, one would think Google would have anticipated solid sales and managed accordingly. Unfortunately, the phone launch was ill-handled to begin with.

Google never explained what time the Nexus 4 would be for sale on the initial launch day. As a result, many prospective buyers were hitting the Google Play store and repeatedly refreshing the page in frustration when greeted with a “coming soon” message. Once sales started, the order process crashed on some, leaving them out in the cold as others snapped up Google’s stock of the smartphone. Some who signed up for notification emails on the start of sales never received them.

In short, the Nexus 4 launch showed that Google still has room for improvement in a direct-to-consumer sales market via Google Play. With new smartphone stock available and notifications going out in advance — with a set time for orders to start — Google’s taking a step in the right direction to improve the shopping experience.

    1. Same thing happened to me. I added 2 16GB to my cart right at noon and got an error. Left out in the rain until the next horrible online buying experience. Get it together Google!

  4. WHAT THE FFFFFFFFF. I literally refreshed the page and added it to my cart within 10 seconds of the clock turning to 12PM PST… It would let me check out.

    1. It sold out within seconds. I was jammed out of completing my transaction before the clock even struck 12:01. Google’s “free” services work so well. Why do they suck so bad at taking my money?

  10. Yea, I’m not happy with Google right now. They really need to do something about that. I’d be fine with ordering ahead of time, but this whole “you have to sign in when we’re selling it, and hope you get a chance to buy one” kind of thing is ridiculous. How long do we have to wait until we can actually buy one? Watch the next best thing come out and people still can’t get a Nexus 4…

It took me 2-3 weeks to get a reponse on my order for the samsung built gnex………no follow up, no explaination, though 2 days after they finally said, shipped and charged my card they announced Nexus 4. So they basically dumped me with a phone they new would be obsolete in 2 weeks for the same cost as the 4. Ordered on one day, said 2-5 days for shipping only on webiste…after 48 hours of no response I pinged them every time…….as there is no grievance system…….0 follow up on 3 requests then got I am checking a week later……..another round, no responses…..then 3 weeks later it hit my debit card and said en route…….no follow up or over night for free…….just here ya go. 4 weeks……to get a phone that 2 days Later i see the 4 announced.

  21. I know that we are all excited but lets be patient. we will all get the phone. Everybody is just used to one click shopping. Just remember how easy we really have it, and not getting the phone instantly is anything but a luxury
