Twitter's competitive advantage lies in its real-time conversations. It has terabytes of data, and I'm beginning to see how it's using its data to provide users relevant ads (yes, the promoted tweets thing is working, imo). What they should do, and beginning to do (with partnerships with co's like DataShift) is to sell that data to other companies who would love to mine it. It wouldn't compete with their business model, and would provide a very lucrative revenue stream. In other words.. why partner with DataShift in the first place, Twitter? BE DataShift.

The funny thing is I didn't watch Costolo's lecture before writing my piece. So it'll be fun to watch it all after the fact when I get a free ... hour.

I've been impressed with Twitter's moves this year after so many fits and starts and executive team drama. The recent board appointment of Peter Chernin also seems to point to Twitter's entertainment ambitions.

Also, I'd like to add that it's nice not to get sandboxed into spam because of a link in a comment. I appreciate that while knowing it is likely difficult with the number of others who might use that as an opportunity to spam.

I blogged about this just yesterday and came to the conclusion that Twitter has quickly evolved into a collaborative entertainment platform that serves as the glue of multi-screen viewing.

Twitter is no longer simply an altruistic agent of social change with revenue as a side gig. In 2013, Twitter means business. And I think Dick Costolo knows that they're in the business of entertainment.
