The best thing blackberry could do to stay alive would be to make an Android and iPhone 'blackberry app' that connects to enterprise BES servers. Charge $30 for the app, make it massively secure, and they would be back. Fighting Google/Apple head on is a fools game IMO.

Seamless integration with my ecosystem you say. Android, iOS, or even Windows 8 doesn't truly provide "integration". To have a picture on one device and then move to another is not really something that seems to matter. I also don't think making all of your devices look the same is "integration". Ecosystem right now are as developed as they should be and most of the "integration" features are pointless. Blackberry has shown its power with the Playbook. The Blackberry Bridge is incredible and unlike any other device. Being a primarily Android user it wows me that neither iOS or Android have even attempted the integration they use there. BB10 with the next Playbook might not get the attention it deserves, but it will be ideal for anyone who is smart enough to find it.

I think the 3rd OS will be different by region. RIM will be dominate in Africa and South America, but Windows mobile could be dominate in China and the middle east since they frown on bbm and their inability to control it. In the US I think RIM has a better shot at the #3 spot than MS mainly because MS bring nothing new to the OS market while RIM brings BBM.

What incentive do the carriers have? With Android they can install their custom crapware and have more influence over the "user experience". With Apple they get a product that sells pretty well without much of their own marketing. With Windows Phone they get their "alternative option". Does RIM still charge carriers for their BB server usage? If carriers can eliminate that expense, where does that leave BB 10?
As Van said, many US users are already investing in the ecosystem of their choice. Once users are part of an ecosystem, it gets harder to persuade them to try something new unless its revolutionary. Unfortunately for RIM, I don't know what revolutionary features are left in the smartphone space. Its kind of plateaued into an evolutionary update cycle. Maybe they'll shock me and have a helluva phone.

BlackBerry 10 is going to flop. It's not just about the mobile OS, but while RIM was floundering, consumers were investing themselves in their "ecosystem" of choice. BlackBerry 10 may be an incredible OS, but if it doesn't come together with my other devices I'll never buy one.
