Getting multiple Gmail calendars on a new Windows Phone 8 isn’t difficult, but the process is slightly different from older Windows Phone versions. Follow these simple steps and in under five minutes you’ll have up to 25 shared Gmail calendars on your Microsoft-powered phone.

Gmail calendars in Windows Phone 8

Looking to get multiple Gmail calendars on a new Windows Phone 8 handset? The process is similar to what I documented a year ago with Windows Phone 7.5 but there’s one key difference: You don’t set up Gmail using Microsoft Exchange or Active Sync. Instead, Microsoft added the support right in the Google account setup on Windows Phone 8.

Unfortunately for me, I didn’t realize that and spent about a half hour this morning trying to set this up. Thanks to Dustin Randall on Twitter, who came to my rescue — as well as several others in the conversation — I now have access to the calendars all of my family members on the HTC Windows Phone 8X review unit that arrived earlier this week. Here’s how you can get multiple Gmail calendars on your own Windows Phone 8 handset:

  1. In Settings, email + accounts on a WP8 handset, tap the add an account option and choose Google from the options.
  2. Enter your full Gmail address, password and then hit next.
  3. On the next screen, choose the “Email, contacts, and calendar” option and then tap the sign in button. NOTE: These three steps are standard for Google setup even if you don’t want to sync multiple calendars.
  4. Open up Internet Explorer on the phone and navigate to http://m.google.com/sync
  5. Sign in to your Google account on the web page to see any mobile devices associated with your Google account; for me that’s multiple iOS devices, old Nokia phones and, of course, the new Windows Phone 8 handset.
  6. Find your Windows Phone 8 device and tap it.
  7. On the next screen you should see a list of all Gmail calendars associated with your Google account. Choose the calendars you want on your Windows Phone 8 device and tap the Save button.
    google sync with multiple calendars

That’s it; within a minute or two, your handset should sync and you’ll see the multiple Gmail calendars on your phone. If you try to set Google up as an Exchange/Active Sync account the options to choose different calendars on the Google Sync site won’t appear, so make sure you choose Google during the account setup.

  1. Or, set it up with an Outlook account instead. Use your email as user, aspmx.l.google.com as the domain, m.google.com as the server. Works with Google Apps for your domain as well. Seems more reliable than the IMAP variant lately, which isn’t always syncing real time.

  2. Im still unable to get this to work. I sign in, but it does not give me the option of choosing devices. Any advice as to what I’m doing wrong?

    1. I am having the same issue. I log in in mobile IE and do not get a list of accounts.

  3. how do you do the reverse, ie how to you get appointments made on the windows phone 8 calendar to show on the Google Calendar

    1. @Andrew S–you’ve got to choose your google calendar as the calendar you’re creating an event on. So:
      – open calendar
      – tap on an empty space to make a fake appointment
      – tap the pencil icon at the bottom to ‘edit’ the event
      – Under calendar on the resulting screen, choose your google calendar.
      – hit the floppy disk icon to save.

Calendar events default to last calendar you used, so once you do this you should be saving to your google calendar by default.

Note that it takes a little while for the sync to happen, so if you don’t see your new events on your gcal right away, wait 10 minutes or so & check back.

      1. Thank you Roy! That worked well for me. You are right, it takes a while for the sync to happen, but you can go to settings -> email and accounts ->click and hold on the google calendar and choose sync, then it works instantaneously.

Thank you so much for your help.

  4. Hi thanks for this, but I have one issue. Here in Australia we have appointments every fortnight (2 weeks) not weekly or monthly.
Is there anyway I can set up Google or Outlook calendar for fortnight appointments. As I have to go in manually and delete the weekly ones just to make sense of it. Shame this feature is not an option for every 2 weeks in settings.

  5. I have the same problem as ppl above. I cannot choose on google/sync. it navigates away from the mobile site to www. altough in the settings I prefer mobile websites.

I don’t get pass step 5. I am not given a list of phones to select. Anybody able to get this to work in Windows 8?

  7. In step 4, try this url instead https://m.google.com/sync/settings/iconfig/welcome?source=mobileproducts&hl=en it should work now.

    1. This so worked for me. why is this not in the original discription?

    2. Thanks, this finally worked for me using your url!

  8. Looks like Google is making it difficult for WP users. I’m not able to select my device in step 4. I get redirected to the support pages.

Even the link posted by mirusen two days ago does not work (any more?) either.

  9. This worked for me:

Use instructions from here: http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/feature-adding-multiple-google-calendars-windows-8-calendar-app but instead choose your Windows Phone 8 device.

Alternatively, you could try using an non-WP mobile device to go through these step. It should work then. It’s all a matter of changing the settings.

  10. Wow Google really are trying to make this hard for us aren’t they.. I followed the instructions jonlee directed and it worked a treat.

  11. Okay – but how do I get someone else’s Google calendar that they’ve shared with me to show up on my HTC 8X? I can see their calendar when I log into my Google calendar on my laptop. I see my calendar on my phone. But I don’t see their calendar on my phone.

Open the settings page again on your browser. The same page where you enabled your multiple calendars. On that page you should notice there are 2 sections of calendars, your own and ‘shared calendars’. Those are calendars shared with your or that you’ve share with someone. Enable the ones that you want and save. Hope you worked it out.

  12. Thanks for this guide but the URL has changed to m.google.com/sync/settings/iconfig/welcome also noticed by someone else in comments

Okay I’ve been seeing alot of comments about how the Google sync procedure given here for us Windows Phone users doesn’t work. This is my solutions and it SHOULD WORK! On your IE mobile browser for your phone go to this exact address CHARACTER for CHARACTER; even the ‘/’ at then end of ‘settings': https://m.google.com/sync/settings/

Once you do that sign in and select the device ‘WindowsPhone’ that should be displayed (I’m using HTX Windows Phone 8S). Now you should be able to customise certain things like what calendars are displayed, enabling ”delete mail as trash’ for this device’ for example. Once your done save and sign out. Now the next problem you’ll encounter is that you do not immediately see the synced calendars as part of your phone calendar. Go to settings for your phone not you calendar, just the general settings for the phone. Go to ‘email+accounts’ and select your google account. Scroll down and deselect ‘calendar’ from the content you want to sync. Then save. The reason you do this is to force sync the calendar; once you save you’ll notice the google account is greyed out as it’s ‘synchronising’. Once its done reselect your google account and reselect ‘calendar’ under content settings. Save and voila :). It should grey out again because it’s synchronising; then go back to your calendar and check under the calendar settings that your multiple google calendars are there. Hope this helps! Good luck :D!

  14. @jonlee, convoluted but it worked a treat for me. Thanks

  15. This is the solution: on your WP8 go to https://m.google.com/sync/settings/ (make sure it’s the English language). Select ‘WindowsPhone’ and select all the agenda’s you want to sync!

  16. https://m.google.com/sync/settings/ is not longer workin. Any other idea? I did it just one week ago and now i just change to a Lumia 620 and there’s no way a reach the site to allow sync.

  17. This doesn’t seem to work any more. Even following the instructions from @jonlee I can’t get it to work. The Google Sync page at m.google.com/sync won’t even load on iOS any more…
