I had one for two day. I like the way windows 8 lays out on the screen, however I really didn’t like the way IE10 laid out your favorites. There was no way to really organize favorites they just show up in a huge group, and it you want to use IE from the desktop the on screen keyboard becomes disabled to touch. It was a deal breaker for me.

The poor software and lack of apps combined with with the juggernauts of Apple/Android make it a non-starter, right?

What did people say about the XBOX when it released? Oh yeah, “good hardware, poor software, no games”

Don’t count Microsoft out of any race – just ask Sony and Nintendo.

What relevance is that today? I own an iPad that is all decked out the way I want it. Then, I buy a Nexus 7, go to the Play store, and in minutes I have my Flipboard, Currents, Kindle, etc all loaded and ready, making the device deeply personal and ‘mine’.

When I bought the HP Touchpad, before the firesale, I returned it that day because I was used to having the iPad and I couldn’t get the Touchpad anywhere near as functional or fun.

This is what MS is facing initially. We all know that many apps will come quickly for RT, but as the old saying goes “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”.

But there is a Apple, Google, and people problem they won’t wait months on end for apps to appear for the surface, particularity with Christmas coming up, Apple was able to get away without apps five years ago initially because the iPhone was a iPod too.

How many apps did iOS have on when it was released? If there is one software brand where you can expect software innovation, that brand is windows. This tablets will sell in massive quantitites and no serious app developer can afford to ignore it.

There is nothing short sighted about noting the lack of apps on a tablet. A tablet without apps is a brick and buying one can only make you un-app-y.

The only thing journalists seem to whinge about is the lack of apps. When will they grow out of their short-sightness?
