Before abandoning the project, I tried nearly every office productivity suite on iOS and Android (including the promising, but still flawed, Polaris Office) and they are not replacements for the “real” Office. Document formatting fidelity ran from “ok” (at least we didn’t delete your prior formatting, even if we couldn’t see it or edit it on the tablet) to “why does this look like hieroglyphics” with formatting worse than the bad old days of round-tripping a document from Word to WordPerfect and back.

So, although Microsoft is losing incremental revenue, one has to guage that revenue against the one truly competitive advantage Windows 8 tablets will have against iOS and Android – the fidelity of file compatibility across platforms and apps. WHY would Microsoft weaken the WIndows 8 release with an iOS version of Office?
