Great article - many thanks - in answer to your central question:
'I wonder if we designers have done a good enough job explaining what “design” really means?'
A resounding 'no we haven't!'
I have always believed in the value of simple strong messages and my answer to the question is
'Design makes things better'
There can be myriad interpretations of what constitutes 'better' as demonstrated by the noise beginning to be generated by the article or is it generated by Apple's continued successful commitment to designs fundamental value?

Great article. Thanks for that. It seems that with the democratization of the Internet, all changes in design have to be dramatic changes of shape that signify change to the layman, rather than beautiful refinements that lead to a great product getting better, as seen through the eyes of the driven perfectionist. I hope more designers will ignore the cudgel wielding masses and trust their expertise and greater aesthetic opinion. Democratization is a great thing, but the general coalescing of the Internet and the trust some put in the opinion that is gleaned from the great averaging means that horse sense or the opinion of the 18 year old couch CEO is valued over some "snooty" designer. We wouldn't have the beautiful Patek Philip watches of today had our ancestors yawned at every beautiful refinement made in Swiss timepieces. We have experts for a reason and the masses don't, by definition, appreciate all the hard work by people who are truly driven, passionate, and divinely talented. The devil is in the details and it's not bullshit if someone is paying more attention to them than you.
