This all sounds nice, but in what way is NFC required to do this, while Bluetooth 4.0 LE is unsuitable? I actually would like to know if someone has the answer to this, because after reading about both technologies, there was only two things that NFC could do that Bluetooth 4.0 LE can't do: be able to detect passive RFID tags, not applicable here, and operate at only a few centimetres which is one of its security features.

After watching Apple's Developer Conference Videos, it is clear that Apple is not snubbing NFC ignorantly or just out of spite. I think they are planning to never incorporate it and use Bluetooth for all the common applications that NFC is planned to be used for.
