" you do not by default wander around with your phone held out in front of you"

au contraire mon frere! i've seen individuals use their ipals to choose the correct exit, all of which being less than 50 yards away from each other. many kids and some business folks are glued to their mini-computers.

i do hope you are right, but considering future eye display technologies, i think its just a matter of time (and a generation to not think its creepy).

You raise an interesting point. AR is particularly useful when in a strange city - perhaps the exorbitant roaming rates for mobile data when travelling abroad have been a barrier to that kind of adoption for many people. In some ways, it's been a technology ahead of its time.

I have been using the Nokia "City Lens" AR app since the beta version and have a couple of comments on AR. I travel quite a bit on business and I have started to use the AR app when searching for restaurants and businesses within walking distance of my hotel. It is quicker than doing a search on the mapping sofware and then loading the directions for a short walk. The integration of advertising might detract a bit from the experience by cluttering up the screen but I can easily see the appeal. One of your other comments also struck a chord...I do get some strange looks in the hotel lobby when I am obviously scanning the horizon with my phone. I am sure someone thinks I am shooting video and I will eventually aim towards someone who does not appreciate being filmed.
