Correct that IP location has been available for a few years, serving well the desktop market. But the world is mobile now and increasingly so. The innovation is the COMBINATION of old and new location technologies into a single platform, what I have been calling Location-as-a-Service (LaaS) for many years. Combining technologies old and new (car + electricity, etc) represents a form of innovation, even when using older ingredients in the recipe.

You are correct in your summary that location is becoming “must have” for developers from agencies to advertisers to banks and gaming platforms. We even supply the value-add location-enabled platforms in the mobile ecosystem, including most of the ones you mention in your article. Mobile ads will be a $13.5B market by 2015 (Gartner). The mobile revolution is here, hyper-personal, locally relevant, always on is here to stay!

The company says it's the only location-as-a-service provider to offer this combined location sourcing.

Determining the geographical location of a device by reverse lookup of an IP address has been around for a very long time. Cannot classify this as an innovation as the article suggests and more a catch-up play a-few-years-too-late.
