What is distinguishing a project like OpenStack Swift vs. the alternatives are two things.

First -- proven, production-scale deployments that have an established track record. Rackspace, KT, Internap, SoftLayer and many others are all running in production. API compatibility is a lot different than architectural equivalence. WIth OpenStack Swift an operator can deploy the same system that is deployed elsewhere at scale.

Second -- No lock-in. Basho is only contributing some of the code and they is only a single company that supports it. OpenStack Swift is supported by many vendors, which means that companies can switch to another vendor without needing to change their application.

I'd like to see that published case study of the telecom. -- That's straight-up FUD to advance their proprietary system.
