I have worked with a couple of point-to-point wireless technologies that can deliver 1 gbps. Those technologies live in the Millimeter Wave (70-80 GHz). Licencing for the spectrum is surprisingly easy and due to the small beam form used many links can be located side-by-side. Like the article says, fixed-wireless has had 1 gbps wireless around for a while and for those with the line-of-sight and ability to put in the capital for the equipment and the license fee (I think it is about $500 for a new license) it is a great alternative for a metro connection between buildings.
