It is in Sprint's interest that they lure subscribers to Sprint's revenue stream directly or through its wholly owned subsidiary MVNO partners. Virgin is OWNED by Sprint.

Actually Virgin isn't an MVNO (at least not anymore). Virgin is wholly owned by Sprint, which effectively makes it one of Sprint's prepaid brands. So it's still Sprint selling the iPhone. It stands to lose nothing.

The different is that Sprint OWNS Virgin. There are many MVNOs on Sprint's network out there that are independent of Sprint, and none of them has the iPhone.

It's really fun and exciting to watch this space as the different carriers launch and then differentiate themselves. It is funny how different the approach is for the MVOs as they seem to cater and be flexible to the particular niche they are targeting - the exact opposite of the big carriers that oftentimes come off like big bullies. Anyways, glad to see GigaOm devoting attention to this category!

"Sprint may be MVNOs’ biggest champion but there is still one step it hasn’t been willing to take: hand over Apple’s iPhone to its partners."

What are you talking about? Virgin mobile (an mvno on sprint) has been selling the iPhone since June.
