Maybe I am missing something, but I went to a couple of these sites and it seemed they require you to register before you can see the site. That is a real turn off if that is the case.

I agree that online retailers have built-in advantages when they are focused. Crowd sourcing design is very interesting and we are about to launch a crowd purchasing site that enables like-minded consumers to band together to get great deals due to bulk purchases at flashpurchase.com

I must say that you are on the right path. My perspective on this is a little over a year old, when I left Walgreens and thought about who to work for next in Chicago. As a mobile designer, my thought was that Sears had some great ideas early.

Remember that Sears custom manufactured lots of products through partners. Another Chicago brand made custom designs of t-shirts a decent business, well before Etsy. The power of the Sears catalog is an interesting foundation for design innovation.

Also remember that even now, Sears sells much more than any of the companies you are likely to consider as new stars. And, returning such a brand to leadership may not grow your stock purchases, but will grow your portfolio.
