Ultimately, a fully decentralized model is probably the only way to go. That’s tent.io’s approach, and they went from 0 users to 2200+ in the past 24 hours(!!). Check out tent.is for the first implementation. Pretty exciting…

Crediting the success of the Web primarily to its openness is a bit misguided. Almost everything on the net was open back than.

If openness was all it took, Gopher, Archie, Veronica, WAIS and USNET would all still be going strong.

i think web users have the ultimate control, as the article mentions. it’s a shame that so many people settle for so many walled gardens, all in the name of convenience.

The foundation is broadly open, sure, but there are plenty of organizations imposing de facto control over the Internet. States can monitor, censor, and restrict access with some success.

Google operates as a gatekeeper to both discovery on the web, and monetization of content. Sure, you don’t *have* to play Google’s game, but you’re kissing a lot of attention and revenue goodbye if you don’t. It seems the only effective way around Google is to operate one of these “walled gardens” that everybody seems so frightened of.
