Great article and interesting views. And I agree. The world may not be ready for tablet phone but I am. I searched the net for advice since everyone I have aired my idea to about using tablet as phone emphatically say say NO!
However, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is going to be my choice. It is the perfect solution and the Stylus or S-Pen is the answer to all my prayers for a paperless office solution.
Just think to have the option of signing letters, documents and contracts on the go and sending it back signed! Or you can get your clients signature on the newly edited contract instantly and send them a mutually signed copy while you are still shaking hands on the deal. Magnificent! No print , sign, scan send. It's a long time since an electronic device has gotten me this excited.
And for that once in a while, when you don't want to bring it along, call forwarding to a small basic device while running or biking is my solution. Most people i know here in Dubai have 2 sims and phones anyway. Regards, Kurt

I totally agree and have asked for this same from Verizon for months. Sizeof tablet and phone all in one. Saves on batteries, cables, cases, etc. Not to mention throwing away the laptop.
Bring it on....

Where are we going in the World of wireless technology ?

With all the different sizes and shapes of devices being offered; smart phones, ipads, tablets, laptops, desktops and large screen TV’s, in the not too distant future, I see us doing away with all the concepts of device size and screen dimension.

Everything will be accessible from a device that fits in our pocket, possibly called, ” World Access.” With this idea, the large variety of device sizes will not be needed. It will offer A wireless network with memory, storage & different screen options.

Beside all the features present in the latest smart phone, it will contain an embedded Pico projection chip. One of the most used options, you will be able to select a screen dimension for viewing.

If not projected actually just onto space at a given distance, the most that might be needed will be a clear piece of plastic of the desired dimension or even a clean wall.

Definitely an option, John. If most of your tasks are better suited (or more enjoyable) on the bigger screen of a Wi-Fi tablet, then a basic smartphone that can be used as a hotspot can be a nice / productive setup.

Interesting article Kevin, I am at that point in my mobile contract when I can upgrade my phone and I was just thinking instead o fthe latest and greatest maybe I would go for a handset that has excellent battery life and can run an app that lets it act as a wifi hotspot for a tablet so I can do all my surfing etc on a tablet and keep the phone for calls - and no it'll get m ethrough the day or more without going flat - just a thought at the moment but one I intend to look in to.

Kevin,

Where are we going next ? 09/22/2012f

Coming Soon ?

I can see next for the mobile techies of tomorrow, even before 3D holographic creation, that we do away with the concepts of size & hardware.

You carry one small device called, " World Access ", that has all the present features of the iPhone 5 and yet a lot more. Your first option when picking it up is to select a screen size.

Immediately, A holographic screen of that size appears with access to network memory, storage & multipurpose options. It Pulls in the necessary elements from different Internet sites all at once, the details needed to create an information hologram in wireless space.

Away at once goes the need for all the different size & purpose devices; hard drive pc's, tablets, laptops & TV's.

A printer is all that will be needed in case you want a hard copy.

what's a tablet and what distinguish it from a smartphone? If you go for the equation "7 inches = a tablet" than I go behind you and I forecast that tablets will overpass smartphones for voice communication as close as 1-2 years, at least in selling units (as usage a little bit longer due to natural replacement times)..
