Marshall... Without going overkill and using the bible I knew what you meant. You are concerned with poor people needing to use the actual payphones versus the wifi. Let's just say that the pay phones are used for BAD things like drug deals, drug beepers, prostitutes, and other illegal activity. So no one honest is being inconvenienced by loss of payphones. And yes Bloomberg et al will spy on wifi activities due to homeland security issues. Just don't do anything on this wifi you wouldn't do at the public library as you know you are being monitored there too.

Hurray! America is catching up with the rest of the developed world! This has been happening for quite a number of years in a lot of Asian cities, such as Hong Kong. Granted, free public service is a more recent phenomenon, but the use of payphones as hotspots is not a new idea. It will be more interesting to see if the advent of this revitalization of the payphone creates new, public, "oases," where people gather to utilize a shared resource for potentially similar purposes.
