I am an "old geezer" that was mostly frustrated with being forced fed news content from TV, radio and newspapers. When I got a Mac in the late 1980's, I realized that I could get information that was interesting to me. I am now using one newspaper, two internet radio broadcasts, and 30 web sites. No TV. We purchase many products through the internet. The internet is empowering.

Mathew -- your point about the iPhone's/smartphones' effect on news consumption is precisely right. It is borne out in composite data CDI has compile on our Dashboard: http://dashboard.digitalinfo.org You can see the two overlapping "storylines" -- smartphone introduction/uptake and internet news consumption. There is a major jump in online news consumption right after the iPhone was introduced. Prior to the iPhone, 21% listed "the internet" as a primary source for news. Immediately following the iPhone's introduction, it jumped to 40% and in the process surpassed newspapers.

The two independent graphics are here:

Smartphone adoption:

iPhone to me is a computer which can also make phone calls. I wrote a post this week testing the iWitness service mentioned in your post, http://wp.me/p2ubV9-NO, which even got a response from the product manager of iWitness. I should say iWitness is made for news organizations, not for average mobile device users. As the biggest selling point of iWitness is to search tweets, photos and videos based on time and location, which is valuable for news organizations to local sources and contents during a breaking news.
