Summary:

Want to play music from Rdio or podcasts hosted on Soundcloud on your PS3 or Xbox 360? Now you can – provided you also own an Android phone or tablet. The new Skifta Android app adds support for both services, as well as streaming to the Xbox.

Xbox and Playstation 3 owners can now listen to their favorite tunes and sounds from Rdio and Soundcloud, provided they also own an Android mobile device: Qualcomm Atheros just released version 1.5 of its Skifta media shifting app for Android.

Skifta lets you access and play local and Internet media on DLNA-certified devices. Think of it as a kind of Airplay for Android, if you will. Users can use their phone to browse the videos on their network-attached storage drive and then pump the video to their PS3, Xbox360 or DLNA-compatible connected TV, for example.

The app also offers access to a few Internet media repositories, including TED, ShoutCast and Facebook. Rdio and Soundcloud are two major new content partners for Skifta, adding a lot of value to the app because it makes it possible to play content from the two services on devices that don’t offer any native apps for them.

The drawback is obviously that you still need to run Skifta on your phone or tablet to access the services; but that may not be the case for much longer. Skifta launched an SDK for CE manufacturers earlier this month in the hopes of bringing the service to high-end routers. That means that Xbox owners may soon be able to pump their Rdio music straight from their router to the game console.
