It's kind of sad to watch Jimmie Wales politicize the Wikipedia, but that's what you get when you accept big bucks from the companies that profit from internet anarchy. Wales turned the Wikipedia into a lobbying arm of Big Search during the SOPA campaign and it seems like he's continuing the tradition. The search engines and the hard drive manufacturers want file "sharing" to go on because anything they need content floating around the free and open internet. They don't want the content creators to actually get paid anything because that creates friction and friction hurts their business.

I think this may hurt the Wikipedia over time because it needs the contributions from the skilled writers. Yet if the skilled writers see the Wikipedia as the adversary, embracing piracy and rejecting the rights of artists, well maybe the skilled writers will go elsewhere and they'll be left with the fanbois who write thousands of word "summarizing" Simpsons episodes.
