We're certainly at a tipping point in online education. The need for high-quality online learning options is indisputable, especially as the number of adult learners continues to rise and businesses increasingly need and expect their employees to have contemporary knowledge and skills to succeed and grow in their positions. To that end, the breadth of online learning options is growing faster than ever. However it's important to note there are significant differences between online courses, such as those discussed in this article, and online degree programs provided by universities. When done well, online and hybrid degree programs provided by universities include student and academic support services that assist students as they pursue their degrees. These services are not available with some of the new online courses being offered, which are typically self-paced and do not include regular support from professors, access to academic advising or interaction with fellow students. With applied online degree programs, such as those offered through the Online Education Institute of Post University, students routinely engage in interactive discussions and projects with their professors and peers, gaining valuable feedback, support, and new ideas along the way. This is something Bill Gates noted as essential in a June 25 interview with The Chronicle of Higher Education. So while it's exciting to see vibrant activity in the online learning space, we need to stay focused on creating lifelong learning opportunities that will truly give students the support they need as they seek to develop new knowledge and skills that they can apply in the workplace.

Great article, enlightening summary of the various startups, certainly an exciting area of higher education. I'm curious what the financial return model looks like? Nothing exciting today but within the next decade it may surprise everyone. You mentioned a couple innovators such as German educator, Sebastian Thrun but there are many others including Peter Druker and Sal Khan which went unmentioned. This page highlights 16 people turning online higher education on its head. http://findonlineeducation.com/follow/16-people-changing-the-landscape-of-online-education-forever/
