Three cheers for Satya Nadella and the rest of the Microsoft cloud computing gang like Rolf Harms for taking this approach and being willing to iron out cloud interoperability. So why isn't Google standing behind Vint Cerf who blogged a few years ago about the importance of cloud interoperability. In fact, why isn't Vint Cerf on stage at Structure with these guys?

When Lew Moorman put up his slide that said, "Cloning API's is Impossible", I think he was just exaggerating to make his point. Clearly it is possible, as both Transcend Computing and Eucalyptus have proven. Having the same API doesn't solve all of the portability problems but it sure helps out.

As your article states, no one wants lock-in. Imagine if you could only run an Oracle database in the Oracle cloud; non-starter, right? Ultimately, the customers are going to demand a separation between the as-a-Service offerings and the cloud that hosts them (IMHO).
