An excellent article is one which explains its premise, gives easy to follow examples and gives a relevant conclusion – this is one of those. Quite apart from the quality of the article it does rather beg the question as to why there is still so much resistance from some businesses to enter the cloud? (http://ow.ly/buvmb). As Dave points out while only the ‘IT intensive’ enterprises will see the effects of Jevon’s Paradox there will still be bottom line savings for ‘IT insensitive’ enterprises and this is very much worth striving for. There has been a lot of hype about cloud computing which can be positive and negative. Positive because it gets the idea out there and CEOs/CFOs become interested; negative because hardened CIOs have seen hype before and want to make sure an innovation is worth doing and can be done before committing. I think the introduction of Jevon’s Paradox in to the hype/conversation can only be a positive thing as it doesn’t concentrate on costs alone (which every salesman will tell you he can reduce) but also focuses on efficiency and the long term benefits it can bring to an enterprise or an industry.

I agree, this is a great article, thank you. I have long argued that Cloud is not about cost cutting, but about empowerment and enablement. If you want to really cut costs, shut down the business. My CeBIT presentation, available on my blog, discusses the mindset required when wanting to truly leverage Cloud's potentialities.
Jevons’ Paradox also explains why Amazon works with 3rd party vendors that facilitate monitoring, analysis and optimization of cloud consumption – something which often reduces the amount that AWS can charge customers.
Great piece. Here at Cloudyn we are working toward making cloud consumption more efficient and effective - so companies can benefit more with less...ad infinitum. Really just another example of Jevons' Paradox.
