I think you're missing the point. Twitter as a distribution platform is to the benefit of Media Companies. With Twitter curating all the distributed content is still to the benefit of Media Companies, especially the premium ones, allowing and now encouraging the best content to rise to the top. Both further encourage Media Companies to participate.

If, or rather when, Twitters shifts from a platform for content distribution to one of consumption is where the competition becomes real. Especially if the Media Companies don't control the surrounding monetization. Some can argue that shift happened a long time ago. The irony is the fact the Media Companies have no one to blame but themselves.

Twitter like FB enjoys brand economies of scale that keep them relevant. Particularly in Twitter's case, they have hit the perfect and enviable balance of brevity of content and focus of interest.

Twitter is media, old media just doesn't what to do to represent value for the future like twitter does.

Real-time media is the next phase and just the fact that you deliver it is what is important.

Twitter is a "technomedia" company. I wrote some loose thoughts on this while awhile back: http://www.quora.com/Chris-McCoy/Posts/How-content-wins

This curated portal deal w/Nascar positions them as the media network delivering content directly to an engaged audience of consumers... Media company 101. Boom.

Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. have always reminded me of this famous quote from the Usual Suspects movie: "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist."

Problem with traditional media companies are their product cycles aren't fast enough to keep up with the necessary innovation to play in this technomedia world. Their largest assets are their brands and if they had the technical prowess they could do many of the same things Twitter, etc. is doing today.
