That’s exactly correct. Apple doesn’t have full control over the app so that is why they are developing their own app. I guarantee it will blow Google’s out of the water if history is any indication.

I don’t doubt that Apple will kick Google Maps out sooner or later, but I seem to remember that they – just recently – renewed their contract with Google over Maps.

I believe Apple has control over the iPhone version of the app and that’s why it’s so out of date:

I think that was the whole point of the article. Apple, unhappy with how Google is keeping the good stuff on its own platform, wants to oust them.

That’s a bit of a stretch to say the Android and iOS Google Maps app is “the same mapping app.” The Android one is light years ahead in almost every way. Anyone who has experience using both OSes’ apps would know what I’m talking about.
