The half-life of a device as I see it - is the time by which the device's tech (hardware/software) is just old enough to warrant a replacement.
In my opinion that half-life today is about a year and a half since we buy our devices. Its just an average thing. And people will find themselves on either side of that point.
The problem is that this half life value is just too short. Hardware is progressing "too fast" (though there is no such thing) from the consumer's perspective, and OS is not backward compatible. Together it makes the half life of a device too short and combined with a PC price (~600-700$) it makes the whole purchase process to be a horrible guessing and waiting experience. At least for me.
