If you care at all about privacy, you don't use ANYTHING that can log any information of any sort at all (this includes ATMs, too). No Social Security, no I.D., no debit/credit/ATM cards, no birth certificate, no nothing...yes, it is extreme, but really, that would be the only way in this day & age to actually GET any REAL privacy..... :( :( :( :(

"One big problem is a rule that lets police search without a warrant in the case of an arrest. This makes sense to ensure a suspect doesn’t have weapons or contraband but it is unclear why the exception should also let cops get into the contents of a smartphone. While some courts have put brakes on this practice, others have said it is fair game."

The search incident to arrest is for weapons, contraband, or other evidence of a crime on the person arrested. For example, the little baggie of prescription pills that were in his pocket and then the text "ya man I have 4 bars, 20 each" that were on his phone shows that the pills were not personal use.

CounterCorp, thanks for the comment. You're right, this applies to any smartphone or tablet. I wasn't trying to mislead with the headline - it just reflects the fact my research was restricted to iPhone/iPads (they're easy to search for) . But, yes, you're right that more people will pay attention when Apple is involved.

An interesting topic, but hardly particular to iPhones/Pads — so why the (mis)leading headline ...?

So...how does one totally protect the data on the iPhone? What about when you sell your iPhone to factory condition? I thought all data is totally erased from the device? If this is NOT the case, then the next upgrade I go to I'm going to put my old iPhone in my blender to see if it blends. Also, would it be more secure if email was checked through the browser instead of using the native mail app?
