Mint Julep

It’s Kentucky Derby time this weekend, and this year’s field of horses is both unusually fast and full of rich storylines. You can watch the race live on NBC, starting at 4 p.m., or experience the 138th running of the Derby online — where you can see the race streamed and also place a bet and get a recipe for the perfect mint julep.

Here’s your online guide for Derby day.

Streaming Video: Watch a live stream of the races and up to 5 tracks at once on twinspires TV. New members can join for free.

iPhone App: The free Kentucky Derby app features the weather conditions in Louisville; your party planning check list from the pre-party to Derby Day; bios of the horses and their jockeys, trainers, and owners; and a TV/Radio schedule of when each race begins.

The Mint Julep: While we can’t all “pluck the mint gently from its bed” as Pulitzer Prize-winning editor of The Louisville Courier-Journal, Henry Watterson, once suggested, Epicurious is featuring a simple homemade recipe for this symbolic cocktail and other Derby dishes like Burgoo, Kentucky’s official state dish.

Betting: Before betting your latest paycheck away, check out Bleacher Report’s slideshow of the competing horses and the factors to consider before placing the bet. You can place a quick wager by clicking on Wager Now on Twin Spires home page or place conditional wagers by entering the minimum odds you’ll take before your wager is sent for processing.

Derby Hats: They come in every style and size and are a part of what makes the “Run for the Roses.” Check out Huffington Post’s slide show of some of the most outrageous hats from previous years.

YouTube: Check out Kentucky Derby’s YouTube  Chanel for race updates, interviews and fashion previews. Listen to Mary J. Blige before her performance of the National Anthem at 5 pm!

Twitter: Become one of Kentucky Derby’s 13.3 K followers and enter contests to win a pair of box seat tickets.

Facebook: Check status updates on the most current happenings in Louisville.
