HANA is NOT a key innovation – it is marketing hype.
The core idea of throwing things in RAM to make them run fast is legit.
In memory DBs already exist, as do columnar databases.
HANA is for OLAP (datawarehouses) only.
It is NOT currently for OLTP, and replacing DB2, SQLServer, SyBase, MySQL or Oracle is marketing Hype.
Several alternatives exist for OLAP and Big Data.

But Barb, sales don’t mean anything, nor does beating a self imposed target. The Gartner 2012 MQ for DW DBMs’ specifically states ‘We do not have any production references at the time of this Analysis’. That’s what matters so describing it as a Bone Fide ‘hit’ is pushing it somewhat. It may be interesting, it may be a step up for SAP’s existing customer base (what wouldn’t be?) but as ss1977 states, there needs to be a lot more evidence in the market.

I admit i don’t own a Hana appliance but most report sales are brisk: from bloomberg: Sales of the Hana technology totaled 160 million euros in 2011, beating SAP’s own forecast by 60 percent. McDermott in January forecast that revenue from Hana products will more than double this year.

Hana is a genuine hit? Any evidence? All I’ve heard of is pushing Hana at SAP customers and specific apps SAP has built using Hana (again targeted at existing SAP customers). Is there any evidence of this being a genuine db product with an api others can write against?
