W.R.T. to the comment “…the one issue nobody has figured out… is the difficulty of uploading potentially dozens of terabytes into the new environment.” – this has been figured out.

Aspera (where I work, full disclosure) has pioneered innovative s/w solutions that get large data in/out of AWS S3 over the WAN (public or private), at line rate. We do this today, helping our customers move 100′s of TBs of data to/from AWS on a monthly basis.
