Guilds may appear, but they will be focused on benefits administration and will lack the economic power to set or enforce standards. Like most B2B enterprises, Pareto’s Law will mean that larger clients will have their own standards of conduct for online workers that will take precedence over any other rules. As far as having the influence to set standards, let’s not put the cart before the horse. Having a large N of online workers makes it easier to discern their inclinations before they become habits, but that’s a far cry from the claim that you are a kingmaker.

Well sort of. True that there will be a major shift to online work. But thats not to say there are not problems with the model as it stands today. We are going to need purpose build platforms as opposed to generic marketplaces. Elance is recognizing this with a slightly better project management work platform than odesk. And scriptlance has the niche concept down but I think the future may be more like Weblance where the platform is designed to do 1 thing really well. Projects that are complex will require visibility and control.

I agree this IS the new thing from a contractors position I hope elance grows. Elance work sets me ahead of my peers because its something different. I will always continue to use elance even if its on the weekend part time.
