I don't think it's a non-story, but I don't think its a show-stopper issue for the iPad either. I have the Wi-Fi version and it does run hotter than my old iPad; especially when using a graphic intensive app or viewing HD video. The new display uses 7 Watts of juice at 100% brightness (I usually run mine around 35%) compared to 2.8 Watts for the older model. There's clearly a difference in the heat and it's not solely attributable to a stress test. ;)

Can't say I've noticed this. But then I usually have a smart cover folded back over the back of the iPad when I'm using it. The edges etc certainly aren't uncomfortable.

This is a bit silly isn't it?
You ask, "But where is the heat coming from?"

The heat is coming from the fact that they ran an OpenGL stress test on the device for five minutes straight before they measured! The heat increase is completely explained by the fact that the testers were pushing the device to it's limits.

In normal operation it wouldn't get anywhere near as hot as even the *moderate* increase in temperature described here.

This is a complete non-story.
