Curation has been a hot topic of discussion. I, along with my colleague Mathew Ingram, have been writing about curation and aggregation for a while, and have explored many different aspects of both. Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest are the engines of this new curation trend.

Today, folks from New York-based curation-oriented startup Percolate put up a video. It includes comments from the likes of Maria Popova of Brain Pickings and Tina Roth Eisenberg of Swiss Miss talking about what curation is and why we need it. It’s an enjoyable video that explains curation in a very articulate fashion without resorting to hyperbole.

I wish the Percolate folks would talk to three curation veterans who have been doing it long before it become a trendy word — John Gruber of Daring Fireball, Jason Kottke of Kotte.org and Scott Beale of Laughing Squid. As for me personally, curation is no different to blogging. I have been practicing it on my personal blog, highlighting everything from shoes I like to a snappy quote from Mark Zuckerberg to a video about Kiev.

  1. Thanks Om, glad you enjoyed the video.

We wish those three could have been included as well. We tried to get Jason, but unfortunately he wasn’t available during the shoot. Scott would have been awesome and was an oversight on our part (for which I’ve apologized to Scott) and John Gruber would have been excellent, but none of us had a good introduction to him. Anyway, we’ll have to get them in for the next video.

Thanks Om for curating this video.
Regarding the definition of curation: Some people think that it’s only a matter of filtring. Having in mind an audience (or a specific audience) gives filtring and editorializing a meaning.
Indeed, filtring the most valuable content for me (as a user) could be called: Bookmarking.
If I’m filtring without added value or just content I love: it’s sharing (Twitter, FB, pinterest…).
But if I’m sharing valuable content to a specific audience with a context or my personal view (sometimes against the original content) : its curation.
If I’m doing it as a brand within my brand web presence (ie: Blog) : It becomes a part of my Content Marketing Strategy.

And actually, this is what we are proposing in MediaHeroes.com (http://www.MediaHeroes.com).
It’s a curation tool for brands that helps them to become Media using content curation.

I can send you more info about MediaHeroes if you agree.
