I agree with you here. I think Klout represents the first platform, and then the whole industry iterates from there.

It's not so much Klout as the idea of Klout. Anyone's algorithms can be flawed, but the idea of finding out who has influence in any given field is what matters.

Sorry, I was with you until you brought Klout into the conversation. The concept of identifying influencers is valid, but when the algorithm is flawed to a degree (as Klout has been known to have wild swings that provide head-scratching opportunities), you could be calling someone more or less influential than they are. On the other hand, Twitter for example has a variety of established tools that can help evaluate the traction that someone has on that channel. I think it's better to go by channel and then identify the influencers within that channel. Because while it's a nice idea to look at one number for simplicity's sake, the problem is that it may be too simple. And worse, it may weigh certain channels far too much and ding solid authority figures for not being on that channel.

Well written. The mentioned data conference might show up some interesting results. Social media control is certainly becoming a priority for many political broadcasters, and the data produced is becoming less and less protected (as in the recent case of Google's privacy policy opening up past search history to dictate potential search results).
