There are content monetization models that allow users to reward publications or individual authors for their journalistic excellence and relevance (to the user). There are models that allow for on-demand, portal-agnostic micro payments — paywalls are not the only solution.

More, the open, on-demand models generate much better financial results (8 times better than traditional paywalls) and engage users more, as they are user-centric. Users want to have a choice of what and when to read and in some cases also how much to pay for content they want.

During the last Paywall Strategies 2012 conference in London, Znak it! presented one such model. But there are many more.
