Properly designed (and this is an important caveat) there won't be a need to tell your devices to shut up.

As an example, Volvo Car's view of the connected consumer (see their presentation at the "Need for New Business Models" seminar at MWC)aims to deliver the right services to consumers in response to consumer's desire for less complex decision making and to have less of their time wasted.

There is an interesting parallel in the Apps world where there is a move to improve search (and eventually presentation of Apps) through the existing libraries (which currently consume significant amounts of time to navigate).

I agree with Paul - information must be presented in useful ways. At ThingWorx, we refer to that as adding real-world and social context to connected device information. Of course, this is becomes truly useful when you can build a value-add application on top of your platform that can present the data.

Intelligent agents should solve this by collecting and presenting the information in useful ways (burglar alarms treated differently than fridge motors wearing out), and by making small decisions according to broader policies (out of town? Cut the heat, turn on the alarm and warn me ahead of my flight to move the car out of the street cleaner's way).
