In case you’re tuning in late, SGN readers nominated smart grid companies they think should be on our radar in the year ahead. Then SGN readers voted in the top 12 via our polling tool.

How do you think the readers did this year? Did the right companies make the top 12? Scroll down to see all 12 companies that SGN readers believe will be doing big things in 2012.

Our 12 in 2012 finalists – in alphabetical order (and with descriptions excerpted from their websites) – are:

CAS Tecnologia – With headquarters in Sao Paulo, Brazil, CAS is a leader and a global technical reference in the joint application of engineering technologies for metering, telecommunications and systems. CAS’ solutions allow the accurate, frequent and controlled gathering of relevant information aiming management and control of distribution of natural resources such as electric energy, water and gas.

ElectSolve — ElectSolve helps electric, gas and water utilities maximize the return on their technology investment dollars. ElectSolve is a technology/vendor-neutral, full service provider of technical, management and consulting services for smart grid-related control, monitoring and automated systems including SCADA, AMI, MDM, energy efficiency programs, demand response and distribution line loss management.

ENBALA Power Networks – ENBALA delivers innovative solutions that pay electricity users to participate in the management of the electric power system. The company operates a smart grid platform that creates a network of large users of electricity and then harvests inherent flexibility in the way the equipment is operated to supply system balance and quality services to the electricity system operator.

GridGlo – GridGlo works with utilities, OEMs, application developers, and other customers to integrate consumer behavioral data with energy consumption data. The company has developed a proprietary software platform that can identify, score, and predict energy consumption behavior. The platform allows GridGlo to create dynamic applications that provide insights into the behavior of all smart grid players.

Nexgrid  Together with its technology partners, Nexgrid provides comprehensive solutions that enable utilities to achieve operational efficiencies, reduce carbon emissions, and offer customers new ways to monitor and manage energy consumption. Nexgrid products are designed to provide the most future proof smart grid network available today. This is accomplished through standards-based real-time two way communication for the management, monitoring, and control of the electric distribution grid.

On-Ramp Wireless – On-Ramp Wireless’ field proven Ultra-Link Processing system enables low-power monitoring and control applications within smart grid, industrial sensing and location tracking. Operating in unlicensed spectrum, On-Ramp Wireless’ innovative signal processing technology finds extremely weak signals even in high noise environments. This results in extreme coverage, high levels of immunity to interference, and a significantly lower cost to deploy, operate and maintain a wide area wireless system.

Power Analytics – Power Analytics develops software solutions for the design, simulation, deployment, and preventative maintenance of complex electrical power systems. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in San Diego, California, Power Analytics’ Paladin software products are used by thousands of commercial, industrial, governmental and military customers worldwide, to protect more than $100 billion in customer assets.

Powerit Solutions Powerit Solutions helps commercial and industrial users visualize, understand, and control their energy costs and consumption by plugging them into the smart grid today. Powerit’s Spara energy management system acts with intelligence to automatically adjust energy usage throughout the site for maximum savings, empowered decision making, optimal equipment management and a greener planet.

Space-Time Insight – Space-Time Insight is changing the way utilities and other organizations with critical assets manage their resources and respond to crises that impact operations, customer service, revenue and risk. From traditional transmission, communications and transportation networks to smart grids and smart cities, the company’s next generation situational intelligence solution makes critical infrastructure smarter, safer and more reliable

Structure Group – Structure provides business advisory, system integration and customized solution development services focused exclusively on the energy and utilities industries. The company relies on deep industry expertise and proven methodologies to deliver projects across smart grid /distribution operations /distribution automation, SCADA and energy management systems, competitive energy market solutions, and energy trading and risk management.

Tendril Tendril delivers end-to-end consumer engagement products, applications and services powered by Tendril Connect – an open, secure and scalable platform that creates a dialogue between energy service providers and their customers. With easy to integrate solutions such as demand response and energy efficiency, Tendril offers insight into energy decisions allowing providers to balance demand, mitigate peaks in real time and minimize operational costs.

Tropos Networks – Tropos Networks provides reliable and flexible wireless communications networks for utilities to build and control the smart grid. Tropos was founded in 2000 and got its start selling its standards-based, secure wireless networks to cities as a foundation for multiple municipal services. With the emergence of the smart grid, Tropos discovered the value its solutions could bring towards the development of this mission-critical infrastructure with its field-proven products and services.
