Two questions: Does upgrading the RAM by yourself void your applecare? Does upgrading the RAM beyond apples specs void applecare?

yes I did the same I went upto 16gb on my Imac and it was like getting a new machine, I also upgraded my Macbook pro 2011 from 4 to 8 and same thing, I actually noticed that macs do seem to run better on more memory.

Just don’t get the memory upgrade form an Apple dealer, they will rip you off amazingly. Up here is Canada, the Apple store wanted $360.00 for 2 x 4GB Ram, Future Shop had it for $60.00. One heck of a difference.
