It doesn’t have as much material as codecademy (its early days) but I think it does a better job at actually getting you to learn something. It also has more variety so its a little more interesting.

codecademy has been a huge disappointment. Imagine a book with no index or table of content (or a class without a syllabus), and each chapter being written by a different author. Codecademy is the equivalent of this. There seems to be little to no quality control of the course content either. Also, just because you know the subject matter doesn’t mean you know how to teach (and a LOT of the “instructors” don’t know how to teach). At least it’s free.

I don’t think you can just say “simply not true”. In the old times when only a few men and even fewer women could read and/or write I’d bet they thought it’s okay that way. Why would I need to learn to write if the monks can do it for me?
Of course I don’t know how valid it is to say that coding is as important as reading and writing, but in a time where computers begin to be everywhere, it gives you some kind of freedom, just as reading and writing did.

It’s a nice site, and there are certianly others that will do essentially the same thing (teach the basics of coding) however I disagree with the article to some extent. The idea that coding is like reading and writing is simply not true. In my experience more and more writing/coding is done offshore, negating the need for an american to know how.

It’s accessible for me…of course I don’t have vision impairments or other disabilities…why should 99% of the world change for 1%?

My disappointment with Codecademy is that it is not accessible. Software development is a great profession for people with vision impairments and other disabilities. I hope they fix these issues.
