Apps simplify the process and optimize the screen size and user experience. Case in point email apps and now Siri. Siri’s bump in data usage is due to making it easier to access information. It’s no wonder people are using it as much as they are.

People dont want to spend their time in the OS, instead using the Apps to get to or manipulate their data.
In the Desktop World, everyone is in Office or their Browser.
If the Browser is the new Web OS, than users spending their time inside the Apps themselves versus the Browser, makes perfect sense.
