Christmas day 2011 was a record-breaking day for Android and iOS device activations, says a new report from mobile analytics firm Flurry: Activations hit over 6.8 million, an increase of 353 percent over the baseline established between December 1 and 20. Activations were up over 140 percent compared to Christmas 2010. Shopping via mobile device also hit a new record.

Flurry estimates that 242 million Android and iOS apps were downloaded on Christmas, “more than double any other day in the history of iOS and Android devices, except December 24, which delivered roughly 150 million downloads.”

The company anticipates 1 billion total app downloads between December 25 and January 1, 2012.

Meanwhile, the AP reports, “online shopping jumped 16.4 percent on Christmas Day over last year, and the dollar amount of those purchases that were made using mobile devices leaped 172.9 percent….nearly 7 percent of all online purchases were made using iPads.”
