An “iPad mini” is the only feasible way to get “retina display” onto an Apple computer. (and we all know how Apple likes to share new technology across devices) A regular iPad is just too expensive. That’s why I continue believe that a 7 or 8 inch iPad mini could be possible.

Replacing the iPod touch is an excellent game plan. Nearly all the people I know who use iPod touches are TEENS. What better way to get teens into the Apple product vacuum than to get them started on a tablet computer, instead of an iPod?

I own an ipad. I bought a 8.9″ Galaxy Tab because I thought that size was the best compromise between the 10.1s and the 7″, which are really too small for most things except reading.
I use them both the same. The 8.9 a little more because is new and I am learning about android honycomb which is a great improvement from the 2.xxx line.

But, there is no comparison between the ios ecosystem and android. You can find a lot of things on android, but the really good apps are on the ipad, period!

Try to find a news reader app for android that is even a little close to Zite, my favorite, or aol Editions, the most elegant news reader around by far! You will not find them. You can name all the new ones like Currents, 360, I tried them all and they are not bad, but not at the same level as the above mentioned ios apps.
Google need to work with developers to bring the best of their work to android to stay relevant and not become just a game and reading devices.

Regarding size, 7,85″, will be still too small, I think. If Apple goes to an 8.2 to 8.5,that will be a hit and will not compete with the regular ipad and would destroy the 7″ market that is so limited. Just try the 8″ Vizio tablet for size and you will convince yourself that the 7s are just too limited.

If Apple priced them at the right market level they will have the small and regular size tablet market all for themselves. I hope they do. I am tired of copycat apps that cannot delivered what they advertised.

there is a need for 2 new devices, neither of which is a 7″device
1. a unROLLable device, maybe an iphone with a scroll on the side that you can unroll for a large screen. what i want is something to pop in my shirt pocket, 7″is too big to carry and too small to be useful.
2. a double size device, with ability to write on at least one (make it foldable perhaps). the iPad can’t quite displace the computer but it almost can for 90% of the time. Maybe that’s a unrollable extension, imagine unrolling 3 screens wide. Now i can really look at plans, multipage notes, etc.

I agree. I think they should just call it iPod (no classic, no touch). Bigger thank iPhone, smaller than iPad. For games, navigation and so on.

Manish, you may be right, but a cheaper iPad 2 or a higher resolution iPad 3 doesn’t improve the portability of the device. That’s the main draw for a 7-inch tablet. ;)

Next year, Apple will be launching iPad 3 with retina display starting at $499 and at the same time, they will announce that iPad 2 will remain in the line-up starting at $299. Let’s see how many people buy a 7″ device then.
