The very idea of frequency bands is out of step with a world of bits. The idea of spectrum allocation is a product of 1920’s physics and railroad metaphors. We no longer need to compromise the US First Amendment. As I wrote in http://rmf.vc/sd we need to start by asking why we are segregating wireless bits from wireless bits.

White spaces and Wi-Fi are fundamentally different technologies with different applications and limitations. It’s misleading to use the term “Super Wi-Fi” for a system that has nothing at all to do with Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi has proven utility as a small-scale, limited distance system. White Spaces aim to provide wide-area, large-scale coverage and service, and their utility is far from proven.

Call the WS systems “Unlicensed Wi-Max” and see how many people salute; that’s a more honest name.

Cisco and Qualcomm are both very against white spaces as well. Also this bill is an attempt for Republicans to stick it to the FCC.

Not too many years from now when our bodies and livelihoods are dependent on wireless, we will be beholden to corporate entities that locked up spectrum rights in long-forgotten auctions. Carrier IQ will be rolling in dough as it collects not only app use and numbers dialed, but cardiac and respiratory activity, user travel patterns and indicators of uncontrolled thinking.
