This week, I got my hands on what may the hottest new Android handset; at least for now. I bought an unlocked Google Nexus at full price from a U.K. retailer and it arrived late in the week.
The phone includes a pentaband radio, meaning it works fully on both AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s networks. I haven’t tested it on AT&T yet, but a popping a T-Mobile SIM card in has already provided download speeds of 9.4 Mbps.
I shared a brief video overview of the Galaxy Nexus within 24 hours of it arriving, so I was still learning the ropes of Android 4.0. It impressed me then and continues to do so with more usage. The phone has very capable hardware to power Google’s mobile operating system: a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of memory, fast mobile broadband and a gorgeous 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 resolution. But no phone is perfect and some may not care for the 5 megapixel camera sensor Samsung used for the Galaxy Nexus. With limited use, I find it to be more than adequate for still images in good light and also for high-definition video capture up to 1080p resolution. During the next week, I’ll try to connect the phone to my HDTV to see the output on a larger screen.
Where there may be gaps in the hardware, the software is excellent. Android 4.0 is the best attempt yet for any company to compete against Apple’s iOS 5 operating system. Google has refined the user interface by bringing the most positive aspects of Android 3.x (aka: Honeycomb) to the smartphone screen. Gmail’s revamp is superb as is the overall consistency of the entire user interface.
It’s not all peaches and cream though: There’s an issue with Facebook integration and I’m seeing some strange text formatting problems in the otherwise very impressive stock browser. And I love how my Google Chrome bookmarks on the desktop are kept in sync with the Galaxy Nexus. In fact, I like Android 4.0 so much, I’m going to install it on my old Nexus One smartphone when time allows.
This week wasn’t all good news though. A demonstration of software called Carrier IQ showed the service to be collecting data from smartphones; mainly on Android devices. The story continues to develop, but some are concerned — rightly so — about Carrier IQ’s lack of transparency. The service is apparently installed at carrier’s requests and consumers aren’t aware of this. Nor is there a choice to opt-out or shut down the service; it simply runs silently in the background.
This type of practice is one of the several reasons I’d rather have a Nexus phone, which doesn’t include any carrier software. My bigger reasons were faster Android updates and the ability to easily customize the phone with other Android software, but diagnostic tools that are hidden in the background got added to my list this week.

The Verizon version does have carrier software installed.
The Verizon software… my Verizon and Verizon backup assistant …just apps that can be disabled to never see evidence of them. Do some research next time. What he is referring to is software that can never be removed.
Plus, nexus comes with an open bootloader. If the software bothers you it is easy to flash a “virgin” copy of ICS onto it and viola! no more verizon app!
I can see Jay’s logic. Nexus phones should be clean from CarrierIQ because traditionally, carriers weren’t allowed to fiddle with the stock ROM on the Nexus line.. But now with Verizon apps bundled in with the system ROM, it means that the carrier had access and fiddled with the software..
So Nexus = no carrier access = no CIQ
The above equation falls apart seeing VZW apps bundled in with the system

Precisely why I will pass on the GNex. Verizon ruined it and Google allowed it. Sad to see the Nexus brand ruined.
having two Verizon apps (Backup assistant and My Verizon) is hardly bloatware. I use My Verizon all the time to keep track of my usage and my wife uses BUA to sync contacts. At least its not Blockbuster or some shitty Golf game.
Verizon didn’t ruin anythning. Pretty much only the role out of this phone. I mean, it is 2 apps that have nothing to do with the OS and are updated through the Market and can be removed or disabled. And I don’t think that those are anything that will ruin the so called “Google Experience”. They are apps that I was going to put on mine when I get it anyway.
You should fix your story. Verizon doesn’t mess with that crap. apple on the other hand does. its currently running on ios5.
you should READ the story, he clearly says that “crap” won’t be on the Nexus. The only Verizon software will be 2 small apps (that are actually very helpful and useful) which you can easily uninstall if you like

You can still unlock the nexus and put whatever software you choose on there, including a build directly from AOSP, with nothing but Google code.

I think to much blame is being directed at Carrier IQ. That’s not to say their in the clear here, but they did not have access to install the software on the phones. The cell phone carriers and/or manufacturers put it on there. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I would not be surprised that fault is found throughout all levels of the industry.

Was wondering when I could buy an unlocked Nexus Prime in the US
and if it would work with all GSM providers world wide
I don’t know if or when an unlocked Google Nexus will ever be sold by carriers in the U.S., but there are U.S.-based importers selling the overseas version now. Or you can order one from overseas like I did and have it shipped. This phone supports nearly all GSM providers world-wide as well as AT&T and T-Mobile here in the U.S.

I paid $672 to Handtec in U.K. for the phone and shipping. Prices are fluctuating, but you should be able to get a Galaxy Nexus for under $700 if you shop around. Thx!

Did you have a chance to test on AT&T? Those numbers for T-Mo sounds REALLY good…8+Mbps down? Really?

Haven’t tested on AT&T yet, but will soon – and I’ll update here. T-Mo has a 21 Mbps network where I live and 42 Mbps service in other areas. The Galaxy Nexus has a 21 Mbps-capable radio (for downloads), so the numbers make sense. I’ve certainly seen faster with LTE, but nearly 10 Mbps down is pretty nice. :)
