I already drive a solar powered car! I have a Volt and I power it with solar panels on my house. ( I live off the grid - no tie in here) I added 9 panels to my system to power the Volt. That cost me $7k. I was spending over $2500 a year on gas before so that means in less than 3 years it pays for itself and my driving is not only emission free but cost free too! Solar powered cars are the future AND the present!

When I built my electric car in november 2008, I got a quote for lithium batteries. $10k for 15 kWH. After running lead acid batteries for 3 years, last month I got another quote for lithium batteries, it was $10k for 15 kWH. I see absolutely no drop in the price of lithium batteries.

It's fortunate that you live in a sunny climate. This idea would be less practical in say, Portland Oregon. For myself I plan on buying the Chevy Volt and charging it from my self-installed 4.5KW solar array.

Jay Leno has has his Volt for nearly a year and he has driven 10,000 miles with the same gas in the tank that was in it when he drove off the dealer's lot. SO he's most of the way there - just needs to add that solar array.
