I went trough a 10+ days blackout in part of buenos aires, Argentina. it wasn't pretty, many elderly could not go up the stairs to their apartments, everybody lost (or had to rush to eat) what was stored on their fridges and stores lost millions in produce due to lack of refrigeration, lack of water for the toilet and the dishes was awful, and traffic was a dissaster. but out of over 3 million people affected I don'r remember any deaths and everything went back to normal. so, no 96 hours is NOT the moment all hell breaks loose.

All other factors or assumptions aside, this article makes a very strong point. Everyone is increasingly dependent on technology. And while the advancements in technology have defined our generation and helped with a lot of things in a very positive way, if some catastrophe happens, most of us would be screwed. Some people can't even go a day without their phone or email (and it's not even a smart phone!)

Having backup cash, gas, food and water supplies is something everyone should have, but I bet not a lot of families do. And whether anyone wants to admit it, I think the day were a cyber attack or a natural disaster truly disrupts our network of technology is not that far in the future. And unless people (especially the younger kids who are growing up during this age of technology) keep in mind what it was like without online banking, smart phones, emails, GPS, and everything else we depend on now, then there will be severe chaos if that day ever comes.

Lucy....understand your optimism...but a few things. 1) Wireless Operators spend years and sometimes $100's of thousands of dollars to get ONE cell site past a city planning commission...they will not be able to get huge solar arrays near a Cell site...sites take ALOT of juice. As for the Data Centers, they are often located in remote states that have cheap power, often HydroElectic...big cloud centers use scary amounts of power (any other opinions out there?) 2) Your landline still works, because the Central Office of the Wired Phone company has batteries and backup...so same issue, plus huge percentages of under 30's have appropriate ditched their landline phones 3) The Digital TV stations will be out of power unless they have backup as well...There has been legislation (after Hurricane Katrina) trying to require Cell Towers to have battery backups...but whether a Cell Tower or a local TV Station...backup would cost them alot of money to purchase and maintain.
